Change Registered information in Windows
If you are interested in changing what name/manufacturer your version of Windows is registered under, you can do this with a very simple registry change. This applies to all Windows versions although I cannot verify if it is the same on Win7 as I do not have a Win7 box yet.
Now you might be asking yourself why this might be useful. It might not be for everyone but I used this registry key very often. A while back, I was in charge of a large rollout at my office and that's when I used this key to list the different versions of my image that I was testing. For example, when the initial rollout occurred, I labeled my first image as version 1.0. When it came time when I needed to change the image or fix something to my image - I would change this value to the next version number to keep track of which PCs were running on old images. In my case, it was quite handy. You may also find a use for this key, that's entirely up to you.
To change the registered information follow the below steps:
- Open Regedit
- Navigate to the key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
- Find the keys "Registered Owner" and "Registered Organization"
- Change the values to anything you like.
To access the system information where this information appears:
On Win XP - Hold the "Windows Key" and hit Pause/Break (Handy Hotkey)
On Vista - Click Start, and type WinVer in the search bar and hit enter.
